A Head Start on 2020

I was talking to Doreen, my mother-in-law, last week on the phone. When I asked how she was doing, she reported that she felt tired from being on her feet all day. At 86, Doreen had worked for hours to baking for the upcoming church bake sale. She told me that she has lots more to bake in the next few weeks! When I asked why she doesn’t take it easy, she explained that many of her friends are alone over the holidays, and that she would like everyone to have some homemade Christmas baked treats. Before December even began, she was getting a head start on her mission.

Be inspired by Doreen. By spreading generosity this holiday season, Doreen has increased her sense of community, she can take pride in performing meaningful work and her mood is better. The only price she pays is slightly sore feet! So why not get a head start on spreading generosity this holiday season, like Doreen? Yes, this time of year can definitely be expensive, but there are many ways to give that take no financial toll. Here are some simple ways you can spread joy and holiday cheer to those in your workplace and neighbourhood!

1) Make community service an office affair! If you are in the position to plan a holiday event, create an opportunity for staff to volunteer together to support a local organization or initiative. It will encourage a feeling of social cohesion at work, improve office moral, and boost your organization’s public image!

2) At home, your family can sponsor another family this holiday season. The Surrey Christmas Bureau has an awesome Adopt-A-Family Initiative and the YMCA runs fantastic giving programs. There are families out there that without the financial resources to surround themselves with traditional holiday comforts. Not only will you brighten someone’s yuletide celebration, but you might make new friends!

3) You can create a charity drive in your office! I guarantee it will be appreciated by others who are looking for an opportunity to give. Covenant House is accepting clothing donations and the Food Bank is always accepting non perishables!

4) Invite someone who is not able to celebrate this December to partake in your family tradition. Many folks aren’t able to celebrate this year with their families, and welcoming someone new to your gathering is a beautiful gesture that could completely transform someone’s holiday experience!

5) Daily gestures of goodwill are also a way of spreading generosity. It’s important to remember that holding the door, doing the dishes, saying hello with a big smile can have a huge impact on those around you. Embody the spirit of giving with gestures big and small and you will be on track to have a magical holiday.

As you are able, spread some generosity this December. The skills, community and pride you achieve will give you a head start on a wonderful year ahead in 2020. Make Doreen proud!
