Grow and Transform - September Newsletter

The seasons are changing. The breeze carries a chill. We have learned many lessons over the summer months that will ease our transition into Fall; we know our own strength, have new ways of gathering that aren’t physical, and we no longer take our communities for granted. For me, September is all about learning from the past to make way for a brighter future. Take heart in the immense growth we have experienced, both as individuals and within our communities. I hope you will celebrate this growth with me and apply these lessons as we transition into the autumn months.

The Jewish New Year, known as Rosh Hashanah, is almost upon us. Beginning on September 18th, Rosh Hashanah marks the beginning of the 5781st year in the Jewish Calendar. This week, my Jewish friends shared some information about beautiful customs associated with Rosh Hashanah. For example, it is customary in Jewish tradition to enjoy sweet foods like apples dipped in honey and bread sweetened with raisins, to usher in a sweet new year. On the other hand, following Rosh Hashanah is a 10 day period of reflection and atonement on the mistakes and sins of the year behind us. I like this balance of celebration and sober reflection; this year in particular requires we embrace the sweet moments in life, but honestly reflect on the lessons we have learned in the face of hardship. I believe we can all borrow these new year rituals to insert some energetic change into the coming year.

Earl Nightingale classifies people into two categories: river people and goal people. The first group enjoys pastimes, activities and experiences without having specific outcomes in mind. The second group needs to work towards specific objectives. Neither is wrong, however if you identify with one group more than the other, it will serve you to take on a new approach. Permit yourself to diverge from your typical patterns and explore a new ways of moving through the world. Learn more on Chuck Frey’s blog.

Did You Know: Over 95% of electricity used by British Columbians is generated by dams, many of which were constructed over 50 years ago. Our predecessors were far ahead of their time, building large hydropower infrastructure that would provide sustainable and affordable energy for generations to come. What wisdom about sustainable energy can we learn from the visionaries who advocated for hydropower in British Columbia?
