Extend Your Gratitude
National Gratitude Month

November derives from the Latin root novem- meaning “nine,” because in the Roman calendar there were only ten months in the year, and November was indeed the ninth month. November is National Gratitude Month, so even though Thanksgiving has passed, make your gratitude a habit. If you missed last month's gratitude inspiration click here for Robert's story.

Mindful Planning
Mindful Gifting

I had a head start with cleaning and preparing for Diwali celebrations last month. It makes it easier to get into holiday planning. We are down to 51 days until Christmas day. It might seem a bit early but it's time to start planning for the holidays. Mindful planning beforehand will save you from chaos. And study did find that people who put up their decorations earlier are indeed happier! So this is how we do it at Green & Green.

  1. Make it Organized- It's always better to have checklists and timelines. Especially when you want to plan ahead. You can find printable planners online pretty easily. Click here for some sample planners.
  2. Make it About Family - Get everyone involved in planning, prepping and decorating. It makes it easier for you and it is a great opportunity to bond. Have your kids help with baking, cleaning and decorating. Or your partner help with putting together the gift list and shopping.
  3. Make it Green - Recycle and re-purpose! Use recycled paper to wrap your gifts. Opt for decorations that can be reused. Put in more thoughts and give gifts that are useful so they don't go to waste. Consider DIY gifts as they are always more meaningful. Plan ahead with the shopping so the you have ample time to make those thoughtful and creative gifts. For other ways to make your holiday more green, try these alternative options.
  4. Make it Fun - Turn on the Christmas music while decorating! Make everyone a cup of hot cocoa after, you all deserve it after all those hard work. You can never go wrong with classic Bing Crosby and our favorite local jazz artist Diana Krall!

  5. Make it Kind - Countdown with kindness. Add an "Act of Kindness" advent calendar to your planner. Pick one small task each day in December and spread the joy! It can be as simple as holding the door open for a stranger or serving a meal at Union Gospel. Get the family involved so everyone can enjoy the holiday spirit.

How Mindful Are You?

With so many things happening at the end of the year, it's easy to loose track of what's important. Mindfulness is the quality or state of being conscious or aware of something. Sometimes our mind wanders away. Take a couple minutes now and see how "mindful" you are.
How Mindful Are You? Measure It With the Mindful Attention Awareness Scale

Remember, it begins with you. Take the time to pause even when chewing your food. Step away from your phone and desk during lunchtime. It's the little things that makes big difference in your busy life.

Yard by yard, life is really hard. Inch by inch, life is a cinch.

All my very best,
