When there was first contact, natives did not know that handshakes expressed a greeting and took it to be a symbol of friendship. The hands are symbolic of this friendship and reaching out to someone and of one’s circle of friends and family.
Copper symbolized great wealth and prestige for the owner and was an integral part of ceremonial life. It was used at Potlatches and was also used as currency. It was believed to have magical properties that affected human health as well as symbolizing light, salmon and other elements basic to life. The Copper often had the owner’s crest on it.
