Original Nunavik art sculptures and artifacts signed by the artists with certificate of originality. Pieces vary in size, shape and by artist.

The Inuit maintained their nomadic way of life up until quite recently, travelling across the tundra in search of game and living in semi-permanent camps along the sea coast. Decorating their implements, embellishing their clothing and carving toys and amulets was part of a very ancient custom that had become second nature to them.

Nunavik Art
Survival of an ancient tradition
Some four hundred years ago, contacts between native people and newcomers increased as more and more Europeans ventured to the far North. The Inuit exchanged furs and artifacts for tools, firearms and other commodities offered by the visitors. The practice of carving figurines for mercantile purposes was born.

In 1948, the Canadian Guild of Crafts organized a first showing of Eskimo sculptures in Montreal. The event received an enthusiastic response from the public and carvings made by heretofore-unknown Nunavik artists all sold within a few hours. Today, the Inuit from Nunavik market their art throughout the world via their co-operative system.

Carvers travel together to soapstone quarries that are sometimes far from their village. Each extracted piece of stone will be examined from every angle before an axe is used to bring out the subject that lays hidden inside it. Surplus fragments are used to either make smaller pieces or to introduce young apprentices to the techniques of sculpture. Chisels, files and drills enable the artists to reveal their subject in fine detail. Each carving will then be carefully polished to highlight the pattern of the stone.

The works of Nunavik artists reflect a keen sense of observation that the Inuit had to develop in order to adapt to an environment we tend to consider as wild and inhospitable. the carvings most appreciated by Nunavik Inuit are realistic ones because they are "true to life".

Sculpture remains a favoured medium for keeping in touch with tradition and for expressing one's inner feelings. An artist working on an important piece is sure to attract a gathering, people who come to observe and to talk about Inuit life, a life they strive to portray in their artwork so that others may become aware of who they are.
